Use this proposal template to turn a rough topic into a clear project plan before you send anything to your supervisor. The goal is not perfect prose. The goal is to make the core decisions visible.
When this proposal template helps
A thesis proposal often feels difficult because it asks you to make several decisions at once. You need a topic, a problem, a research question, some literature direction, a method, a timeline, and a sense of feasibility. If any of those parts is vague, the whole proposal starts to feel unstable.
This template gives you a calm order for those decisions. Fill it in with short notes first. Do not try to write beautiful paragraphs immediately. A rough but honest answer such as "sample access not confirmed yet" is more useful than a polished sentence that hides the risk. Once the boxes are filled, you can turn the strongest parts into your university's required proposal format.
Copyable thesis proposal worksheet
Write a title that names the topic, relationship or problem, and context.
What is the wider academic or practical area? Keep this narrower than an entire discipline.
What is unclear, disputed, under-explained, or practically difficult?
Write one main question that names the key concepts, population or setting, and expected evidence type.
List two to four smaller jobs the thesis must complete to answer the question.
Name the theories, constructs, debates, or source groups that will guide the literature review.
Describe the likely design, sample, data source, instruments, and analysis direction.
Explain what data, participants, access, software, or supervisor approval you need.
Break the work into proposal, literature, method, data, analysis, writing, and final review periods.
List the decisions you want checked before you continue.
Filled example
Weak topic note: I want to write about remote work because it is common now.
That is a start, but it does not yet show a thesis problem. It needs a specific angle, group, and evidence path.
Better proposal note: This thesis examines how early-career employees describe the effect of hybrid work on boundary management and wellbeing. The project will use semi-structured interviews with employees who have worked in hybrid roles for at least six months. The literature review will focus on boundary theory, work recovery, and employee wellbeing.
The better note gives the proposal something to organise. The research question can ask about experience and meaning, the methodology can justify interviews, and the literature review has clear constructs instead of a broad workplace trend.
Proposal review checklist
- The title, problem, question, and method describe the same project.
- The problem statement explains a tension, gap, or decision, not only that the topic is popular.
- The research question can realistically be answered with the proposed evidence.
- The literature section names constructs or theories, not only keywords.
- The method includes sample, data collection, and analysis direction.
- The feasibility section names practical risks honestly.
- The supervisor questions are specific enough to answer in a meeting.
How to adapt the template to your programme
Your university may use different section names. For example, "problem statement" might be called "research problem", "rationale", "motivation", or "context". That does not change the underlying job: the section still needs to explain why the thesis is worth doing and what is not yet clear.
If your programme asks for ethics, data management, impact, or risk sections, add them directly to the worksheet. Do not squeeze those requirements into unrelated boxes. A template is strongest when it helps you meet your real rubric, not when it forces every student into the same order.
If your proposal has a strict word limit, use the worksheet to decide what deserves space. The problem, question, method, and feasibility usually need more attention than general background. A short proposal can still be strong when every paragraph has a clear job.
Common mistakes when using a proposal template
The first mistake is filling every box with long paragraphs before the thinking is clear. This creates an impressive-looking document that may still have a weak question. Start with bullets. Then rewrite only after the logic works.
The second mistake is treating the template headings as proof. A proposal with a section called "methodology" is not automatically methodologically sound. You still need to show why the design fits the question and what kind of evidence the thesis can collect.
The third mistake is ignoring university instructions. If your programme requires a different order, ethics section, reference style, or word limit, adapt this worksheet to that format. The template is a thinking aid, not a replacement for local requirements.
