How to turn a thesis topic into a research question
A thesis topic is usually a starting cloud: interesting, important, but too wide to study. A research question turns that cloud into a project you can explain, defend, and complete.
Why the research question matters
Students often start with a topic such as social media, remote work, sustainability, customer loyalty, or student stress. That is normal. The problem is that a topic cannot tell you what evidence to collect, which theory to read, or what your supervisor should judge. A research question has to do more work. It should name the problem, the group or context, the main concepts, and the kind of answer you are trying to produce.
A useful question is not just narrower. It is connected. The literature review should explain its concepts. The methodology should be able to answer it. The analysis should produce evidence that speaks directly to it. If one of those links is missing, the thesis starts to feel like several separate assignments stitched together.
A five-step method
1. Write the topic in plain language
Do not begin by trying to sound academic. Write what you are actually interested in: "I want to study whether influencer credibility affects young consumers when they see sustainable fashion posts." Plain language helps you see the moving parts before you polish the sentence.
2. Name the practical or academic problem
A thesis needs a reason to exist. Ask what is unclear, contested, under-explained, or practically important. "Brands use influencers" is background. "It is unclear whether perceived influencer credibility changes purchase intention when the product is framed as sustainable" is closer to a problem.
3. Decide the population and context
Avoid saying "people" unless your study really covers everyone. A clearer question might focus on master's students, Dutch consumers aged 18 to 30, first-time entrepreneurs, or employees in hybrid teams. The context gives your later sampling and interpretation a boundary.
4. Identify the key constructs
Constructs are the ideas your question depends on, such as trust, perceived risk, academic stress, purchase intention, brand fit, or supervisor support. If you cannot name the constructs, you will struggle to search for theory and measures.
5. Add method direction without over-promising
You do not need the full method in the question, but the question should imply what kind of evidence could answer it. "How do students experience..." points toward qualitative work. "To what extent does X affect Y..." often points toward quantitative analysis. "How does X influence Y through Z..." suggests mediation or mechanism thinking.
Bad-to-better example
Too broad: How does social media affect consumers?
This question has no clear group, platform, product, construct, or type of effect. It could become a sociology thesis, a marketing thesis, or a psychology thesis.
Better: To what extent does perceived influencer credibility affect purchase intention for sustainable fashion products among Dutch consumers aged 18 to 30?
This version names a predictor, an outcome, a product context, and a population. It also suggests that a survey or experiment could answer it. It is not perfect yet, but it is specific enough to guide literature, method, and analysis decisions.
Questions to ask before you lock it in
Before treating the question as final, test it against the rest of the project. Ask whether the key concepts are searchable in academic databases, whether the population can realistically be reached, and whether the expected evidence can answer the wording you chose. If the question says "affect", you may need a design that supports stronger causal reasoning. If it says "relate to", a cross-sectional survey may be enough, but the claim should stay more cautious.
Bring two or three candidate versions to a supervisor meeting instead of one polished sentence. That makes the discussion more concrete. You can compare what each version changes: one may narrow the population, another may change the outcome, and another may turn a broad "how" question into a relationship you can measure.
Research question checklist
- The question names the main phenomenon or relationship.
- The population or setting is clear enough to sample from.
- The main concepts can be found in academic literature.
- The question can be answered with evidence you can realistically collect.
- The wording does not already assume the answer.
- The question fits your programme, time, and supervisor expectations.
Common mistakes
The first mistake is making the question too impressive. A master's thesis does not need to solve an entire field. It needs a focused contribution that can be defended with the evidence available to you. The second mistake is hiding uncertainty. If the method, population, or theory is not decided yet, write that down as an open decision rather than forcing a polished sentence too early.
The third mistake is changing the question without updating the rest of the project. Once the question changes, your proposal, literature review, methodology, and analysis plan may all need adjustment. Treat the research question as the centre of the thesis, not as a line you write once and forget.
